i am thoroughly disappointed with this, and will most likely never purchase another Valve game unless these problems get fixed. still preparing cache files.
big mistake. I purchased the orange box for PC.
i try again and wait all day, after reinstalling steam and everything. i installed steam, and after waiting 3 hours for it to finish, i started installing ONE game off of the orange box, HL2, and after a cpl hours, it was still preparing cache files.
i leave it on all night (about 10 more hours), still preparing. i want my money back or a copy without steam or something, because my internet here sucks, and the box has ZERO mention of requiring internet OR having to use steam.
im probably just going to torrent it, if Valve yells at me, ill yell back cuz the store bought version sucks.
It has everything from classic FPS action, to puzzle, to insane online multiplayer.+ The price considering all five games is very low.+ The "Source Engine" these games run on are very computer friendly and do not lag even on some older hardware.+ The "Team Fortress 2" game, personally, has been keeping me busy for well over a year.CONS- For those who do not like Steam, don't buy this. The Orange Box is simply one of the best deals in video game history. Five A-rated games all in one package for the price of one is never a bad deal.PROS+ This will keep you busy for a while. I personally have no problem with it, but unfortunately to you people it is required.- While thirty dollars for this is still pretty cheap, wait for a sale on Steam to get it a lot cheaper if you don't mind not getting a physical copy.Every PC game player should at least give the Orange Box a whirl. Try it and you probably won't regret it.
I was supposed to get Episode 1 for free, but they took so long that I moved on to a new computer and thus lost my links. While I know some get tired of people complaining about a game they have not purchased; I think it fair to rate this game poorly as I cannot buy it since it is Steam/Valve. I bought HL2 thru the Steam Download when it came out and I cannot play it as I cannot find my login and password. Valve's support is not good, their servers are slow when they actually work and when you want to play you have to wait hours for the games to 'update'. So I cannot buy nor recommend this software.I wanted to buy it, but when I started reading the reviews to check for DRMs, I saw Steam/Valve has not changed for the better.
Our brave soldiers fighting overseas are often not able to use Steam games to blow off a little steam and this is totally unfair because you often can't make the games to play offline properly with a bad connection. And as an aside, Valve often updates games automatically with patches and or graphic resolution improvements. I never got around to buying Half Life 2 for the PC because you Must use Steam from Valve. I used to sell my old PC games also which you CAN NOT DO with steam games. So after years, I'm steamed. So I was totally down on steam for years.Well I finally broke down and got Verizon FIOS when it came to our town and now I can see why Steam is so convenient. 20 million people have been convinced steam is not so bad.
I'm playing with better equipment than was available when it first came out so it looks better than when it was first released. Years ago I only had a dialup internet account which can make steam very difficult to use.So if broadband is not available to you this can be a deal breaker. So the game can look better than if you load if off an old 8 year old disk.I got a new computer with Windows 7 and loaded the first game Half Life 2. Often Valve lowers the price for older games to make them cheaper than buying used copies which is what I used to do. But If I can buy it lower priced than the the price of used games.I'm so there. Steam had this on sale directly for far less than the disc version. Happy gaming.
Apparently Valve has no respect for customers or US patent law. The the world of Valve, the customer is always wrong. What you buy is basically download software and the permission to load their game on your computer.
For comparison, imagine if you bought a used car that would not start because it was used. If you don't like it, you're stuck, because Valve customer service is abysmal.Their games are good, I'll give them that. Or maybe it's just the principle of "if you can engineer a good game, **** 'em all and make as much money as you can."Valve games cannot be re-sold, thus eliminating any second market, say through Amazon or eBay.
This is how valve does business. There are no labels to that effect on the box or by sellers, and you're just stuck. And you must have an internet connection to play (also not on the box).
But I won't be going back to the Valve well any time soon. It is their (illegal) way or the highway.
